Aeolus was the god of wind that gave Odysseus a bag of winds to help him home, but actually blew him off course when his sailors opened up the bag thinking it was full of treasure. News speak isnt controlled in the same way and can have the same inflammatory effect on a populace.

Aeolus - one of the first major stylistic departures of the novel. NEWSPAPER HEADLINES everywhere, all caps, breaking the flow. The narrator and book itself is self-aware that it is a book with a narrative. All of the rhetoric in this section is trumped up like it would be over the news.

"Hades" really shows Mr. Bloom's place in society as an outsider. It is almost as if he is the only one living amongst the dead like Odysseus.

Similarly, here they set up the fatherless son (Daedalus) and the childless father (Bloom). Will something come out of this dynamic?

This chapter is pretty philosophic surrounding death. I also found it one of the easier chapters to read. Or maybe I am just improving!

Getting to know + like the characters, especially Blackthorne and Turanaga. And also the religious divide! The plot is picking up too, albeit from some reviews I’m worried it’s not gonna get much hotter 😬

Finished Lotus Eaters, one of the more straightforward chapters imo. In the Odyssey as their ship arrived at an island and wanted to check it out, the crew ended up getting drunk on eating these plants.

This lotus idea is mirrored here as a laziness and druggedness fuels the rambling of the subconscious throughout the chapter. Bloom (Henry Flower) has fantasies in his head but chooses not to act.

If I can’t, it doesn’t matter. In my next life I’ll be more prepared.

Alright! One chapter down! Woohoo!
Primary themes so far: Irish-ness. 1904 - still under English rule - nationalist movement. The barren Irish maid. Viewing Haines as British and disliking him.
Usurper - Correlation between Dedalus and Telemachus in the Odyssey, and also Hamlet. Buck is, in a way, akin to the usurpers that tried to take Odysseus' throne.
