Yeah this is just kinda Rich People Doing Things and the main character doing everything fine?? Like it's not really a fish out of water story she doesn't seem to struggle at all?

I like the world in this one, the Hunt and the king and the veil between worlds. She doesn't really know what her goal is, to find her mother or just escape the king or fall in love with Gild, but it's interesting to watch it play out at least

Really cute! I thought it would have a plot rather than just be an anthology of this very intense house husband lol my favorite so far is the Roomba though

I apparently didn't read the synopsis well enough, this is definitely more of a romance-first, glamorous crime-thriller second lol

Author does acknowledge that indigenous people have their own relationship with nature that was almost eradicated by white colonizers, but still irks me he gave the concept of "man as a part of nature, not apart from nature" to some white guy hunter

Well NOW I have to read all about Grizzly Adams. That guy is wild.
Also I do not get the appeal of hunting. But I do like the author trying to find the reason people do it - the usually-male need to prove yourself the baddest thing out there. But using a gun makes you a chump imo

Fun fact, Spanish conquistadors bringing in livestock in California in 1796 and the grizzly bear population boom. Hunters would capture bears for entertainment, making them fight against bulls. The bears would usually outlast the bulls

I love him so much :,)) I do think the teenage-speak is a bit out of place. Stuff like "tiktak" and "no hetero" will just date this sooo bad. Everything else I'm in love with tho

There is a LOT of telling and almost no showing so far. She hate Midnight, she wants to impress her grandmother. The reviews of this are just okay so I am guessing already that's where I'll end up

This renovation plan is literally the dumbest thing I've heard of like no one would think moving two entire businesses to a different location for only a MONTH (not that any renovation would only take a month) is a worthwhile idea. They would rather shut down than move. Also it's so cliche lol

I really enjoy the history being told. I never knew that Lewis of Lewis and Clark committed suicide, or about the Ashley's 100 Mountain Men. I could do without the glorification of whiteman's western expansion, but understand that's where most of the written history comes from

our culture indulges in happiness, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" stuff that isn't always harmonious with a tragic death. This positive thinking leaves the person feeling worse, and results in isolation and hesitancy to express their grief

"Congruency effect" - its harder for us to process memories that are so different from our past experiences. It's harder to BE closer to the time of death because as we gain new memories without the person, it becomes easier and easier to process life without them. We fold those new memories over and make it easier for newer ones to form after

I really like the chapter on Grief Thoughts - how we make sense of death and how it affects us in different ways. The book doesn't really give any techniques on how to deal with our reactions, just explains what they are and possibly why we experience grief that way
Shout out to breathing as a technique though, always a good one lol
