Thought I’d make some substantial progress with the book while travelling to Latvia but I’ve been way too motionsick on transport to read 😭

So many emotions inside of me. None of them good.

Mixed feelings for now. I’m not far in the book yet, so hoping it gets better. The writing just doesn’t hit the same way after Swimming in the Dark tho 😭

I saw that I was reading this book in a dream last night. Thought maybe it’s a sign I should actually pick it up, so here we are.

This was a tough one. I don’t know how to feel not gonna lie.

Very curious to see how the rest of this will play out. But also dreading it at the same time. Sigh.

“I guess you believed what they told us in school, that the Soviets were our liberators.” This just hits so close home I can’t. All the history aspects as well. It makes me emotional. I’m so glad that Latvians finally stepped up last year to fight this rhetoric and challenge the past no matter the criticisms.

Okay, I thought I would like it at first. But now I’m kind of on the verge. There are some poems I like and some I dislike A LOT. (Still just proves my point about Latvian poetry).

I have been inspired to poetry. It looks like this book might be something that I’ll very much enjoy (although I still think poetry should be exclusively in Latvian).

I looooove the writing in this. I also feel like I have to read this book in tidbits because I keep thinking about it and need time to process everything I’ve read. And there’s still the sense of familiarity in it, too. This is just so good.

I can already feel how this is gonna absolutely rip my heart out, throw it on the ground and squash it into pieces…

Genuinely hate that I’m such a slow reader, wish I could just breeze through this and then read it again. Something about this is just so beautiful, the conectedness I feel to the setting incredible. Even though it’s set in Poland, a lot of Eastern Europe has the same feel to it, so in some parts it feels like reading about home.

“Selfish. Growing into yourself is nothing but that.” This book is full of little gems like this, oh my god, I love it so far.

I can already tell this is going to be insanely good

Boy oh boy what a chapterrrrrr. I’m rly loving this so far, tho I can already sense that it’s moving a bit fast for my liking - no slow burn here.
