Baby this is GOOD. Right now they’re talking about love as the most important approach to activism and also Bayard Rustin, and then they move to talking about how to hold ideas about violence in the same space as love. DAJ says when violence is committed what is under attack IS actually love and so we must hold onto love when we speak about the violence. Like… damn.

This book is so weird. Its basic premise - that musicals are open texts that are not integrated at all but are capacious and easily altered - is now taken as fact. But Kirle spends most of his time simply giving a history of the genre. There’s a long chapter on how Jewish use of blackface, like, isn’t really that bad, and now we are in a long side road about the genre’s incorporation of satire.

So far the argument is solid but the style is very, very obnoxious.

Well Genny Lim's Paper Angels is fine – it's an intense and poetic drama that feels sort of like a dream. But let me tell you I was NOT prepared for the intensity and brilliance of Wakako Yamauchi's The Music Lessons. Not prepared at all. What a gorgeous, devastating treatment of the realist kitchen sink drama. I am in love and need to read more of her work. Wow.

Almost every word of this is embarrassing. I’ve begun openly laughing at almost everything that happens. And the main character it’s a terrible, terrible person, who doesn’t seem to realize just how reprehensible he is.

This is so offensive / offensively bad. It's completely unhinged from reality, and manages to trivialize so many actually difficult, terrible things in service of its allegedly titillating story I loathe this book and am so happy I'm halfway done with this garbage.
