Still great. Chapter on Elvis as a performer, knowingly artificial, doing updated blackface, while having been more a student of white music than black.

This continues to remind me of other pop-sociology books I’ve been mildly disappointed by lately (From Strength to Strength, Digital Minimalism, etc.). Heavy on anecdotes, light on research and sufficient explanation, which makes them less convincing.

Excellent so far. Is more about authenticity in relation to race than expected, but the authors are nuanced and unafraid to tread closely to controversy.

The introduction was good, but it doesn’t look like actual proof is coming. Is this one of those theories you’re supposed to accept just because it “sounds right”? It has also completely ignored the behaviors we develop based on groups of people with whom we agree or want to be associated, in favor of us imitating (or differentiating ourselves from) individuals.
