this is an interesting one as it shows how buzz meeks was still a character in development. story was written - or at least first published - in 1988, right around the time 'the big nowhere' was published and this story is written as a memoir of meeks sometime when howard hughes and mickey cohen are 'stuff(ing) caskets'

ellroy must have had a change of heart. poor buzz.
