Beryl's father takes her to Nairobi after a series of deterred governesses. He tells stories of animals, in particular lion cub taken from the Savannah raised like a pet. The point is being made about Beryl herself "what you've done is twist something natural into something else. And you can never trust an unnatural thing. You don't know what it is and its baffled too."
