We learn about the authors past and how she lived in poverty all her child life. She was abused by her father. Molested by her older brothers. Had to take care of 3 other siblings at the age of 7. She had it rough.

Lina finds the person she hates. Torren, a boy who is being an ass to lina. First he pushes her for getting the last egg. Tells her that her sister will die from the illness she has. He does her about the disaster though. We do not know if it's true.

The mayors of Sparks make a plan for how they will deal with the people of ember. They decided to put them in a giant hotel just outside of town for them to stay. Then for 6 moths, they will learn how to build a houses, farm, handle livestock, and basics on how to survive. After that, they'll send them on their way to start their own, We meet a new character Tick who speaks out and is vocal.

Lina seems to be attracted to Doon. The Mayor of Sparks decides to get the villagers of the town to share their houses with those who are sick, old, or have children. Lina and Mrs. Murdo, because of poppy, gets to stay with Dr. Hester, a strange but interesting character.

More people of ember find the way out, but not all. 417 people made it. They journey out to find other people. 3 days of traveling with hot weather they find a city with people who question the hell out of these strangers. Lina learns 2 new words. Pinetree and plaza.

Doon and Lina have found a way out, but now being hunted down. They have to leave now. They leave Ember using the way they found. Using all sorts of new things like a boat and a candle. They go down the river, leaving ember behind. They make it out. The path was real. Escaped ember and made it to the overworld of earth. See the sky and green grass and rolling hills. They see ember from above where they were.

Lina and Doon find a way out of Ember. They were able to decode the chewed up message to find that there was a secret pathway in the pipeworks you could take. There they discovered a smaller river, boats, and the first time they saw movable light. After this the guards and Mayor are now looking for them and in a effort to run, Lina gets caught... DUN DUN DUNnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Found a secret stash of supplies the mayor was stealing

When Lina goes out shopping one day, she's intrigued by 2 guys conversation. It was about colored pencils. In ember city, supplies are short and colored are no longer available, until now. After purchasing 2 colored pencils, blue and green, worth 5$ each, she loses her sister. After she sets out to find her, a city blackout happens, and this one lasted the longest time. Increased Lina's fear of pure darkness.

Alright!! So in what I read, Doon, the boy in the pipe works, wants to find the generator and wants to see how it works. He wants to fix it, and fix the problem with the power. The other character Lina, heard the story of a man who stumbled into the greenhouse about what happened to him and how he left the city and venturing out into the pitch black. This intrigues Lina into knowing more about the unknown.
