The Kalkara remind me of the Basilisk from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. They can both petrify (though the Kalkara can do it for only a short amount of time) and they are both described as terrifying, mysterious creatures who no one knows much about.

I noticed that, from the very beginning of Chapter 1, there is a lot of suspense. First they are worried about the 'Choosing', then Will has a fight with Horace, then they get even more nervous about the 'Choosing'. You just know that something bad is going to happen.

I think the big idea in this book is friendship. Although Huck and Jim aren't really friends (at least at the beginning they aren't), they get closer and more dependent to each other over time. Huck puts himself into a lot of trouble by constantly helping Jim, who is a runaway black slave.

"Then I thought a minute, and says to myself, hold on; s'pose you'd 'a' done right and give Jim up, would you felt better than what you do now? No, says I, what's the use you learning to do right when it's troublesome to do right and ain't no trouble to do wrong, and the wages is just the same?"

"Every little while he locked me in and went down to the store, three miles away, and traded fish and game for whisky, and fetched it home and got drunk and had a good time, and licked me."

"These were strange words to the vagabond boy's ears, and the pleasantest he had ever heard. He could not recollect that the closing words had ever been applied in his case before."
