""If the Party could thrust it's hand into the past and say of this or that event, it never happened -- that, surely, was more terrifying then mere torture and death."

Such would apply only to those possessing the will, courage and ability to think critically.

"People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated: vaporized was the usual word."

Right now? Right now they have begun with words...

"...to Edgeworth’s bewilderment, young Dick proved totally impervious to authority. Free to do exactly as he pleased, indulged...and handed everything he demanded, the 'child bred in the hut of a savage' was becoming a perfect monster." Again, the result of starting out under a false premise - this one being that children are born inherently good and (left on their own) will remain that way.

Strange book. For a time I was trying to find out where the author was going with his twisted scriptural meanings & references. Nothihg is really as dangerous as Truth mixed with lies and this tale is full of them... However, I am surprised by the number of characters I can relate to (sometimes disturbingly so) & how (in some parts of the story) I see shades of who I am.

Actually I am on Chapter 7 but Overdrive doesn't allow for me to see the page numbers of a book. One troubling observation - I DO think references to the number of mentally ill in the U.S. (and the world) are terribly inflated. Even with traditional statistics - I regard them as bloated. Somehow, it appears that the definition of "mental illness" is being misapplied and/or redefined...

So far, so good. Almost too much mystery in the two (non-killing) main characters in the beginning. Distracting for me.
