Figs and Thistles: A Romance of the Western Reserve
thoughts of civil and class rights. interesting so far, idea of rural farmers having just as much right to life and liberty as aristocrats and hypocritical churchy folks. but excruciatingly slow and old fashioned prose. author does treat human rights, gender rights, rural rights though. but gah, tough slog to read and keep going. kinda a not-funny mark twain style. :(

is this cannibalism? ......"Here is the man," the Providential Guide smiled innocuously and then plunged his table knife into him, the one he used tohack off a big piece of meat bought at the Four Seasons, the largest store in the capital, reserved for members of the government. The rag-father raised his eyebrows as the iron blade slowly disappeared in his throat. The Providential Guide withdrew the knife and turn

The Sinner's Grand Tour: A Journey Through the Historical Underbelly of Europe
..."It didn't take us long to realize that the restaurants were also run like banks; dining out is treated like a gold bullion transaction. Every dish on the menu is calibrated by weight--200 grams of cheese fondue, `125 grams of salmon--all of exquisite quality, but all rapaciously expensive. You could imagine the chefs measuring each ingredient with calipers. Les was mortified. "There is no love of cooking here!"

It sounds like some schoolyard massacre waiting to happen, and I;m worried that a lot of innocent people could go down,...."
