On my first read, I missed that Du Mez is essentially challenging historiographically our conception of evangelicalism primarily rooted in theological categories. Instead, she demonstrates that the evangelicalism documented in this book–which is only one among many, she admits–is generated through market consumption and its boundaries are policed by patriarchal presuppositions.
