Perhaps appreciating Bukowski is not in my stars. This is the third time this year I tried to read this book, and I just can't seem to motivate myself to read it. I'm not saying that I don't like it; it has it qualities. It's honest and raw. But I don't like Henry Chinaski, the protagonist and narrator, Bukowski's self portrait, and in not liking him, I don't really care what happens to him.

I love this book; it's both entertaining and educational, funny and serious. But it's taking me a long time to read it, because I only read it here and there. I set it aside for a week or two or even three, and then come back and read a couple chapters. I hope to finish it before the end of the year, but I don't know that I will.
