In East Asia, English arrived mainly through trade and commerce. The earliest contact between English speakers and the Chinese occurred in 1637, when four British merchant ships made an expedition to Macau and Guangzhou (Canton) under the command of Captain John Weddell (see Bolton, 2002 for more detail). In the case of Japan, an English sailor named William Adams was the first English speaker to set foot on Japan.
