I hope this gets better, because right now it feels a little like generic white dude bro coming of age fantasy. I'm far to old to connect with 17 year old angsty buff but sensitive teens. Also the description of the heavier characters as opposed to the pretty ones (and the ridiculous flaws the pretty ones worry about) made me cringe hard.

Really liking this so far, but please for godsake if you like Murder Bot and usually read; Scifi, fast paced Fantasy or more traditional Fantasy, please stay away. This book is probably not for you it is an intricate world which explains itself whilst your reading. This means you will just have to accept things and hope they become clear later. It might feel slow paced, because info is provided slowly.

Really complex world, with a you will find out while you are reading type of worldbuilding. Everything is centered around forests and their power. Just had a really cool battle scene a couple of chapters back. Magic system is interesting, but I don't think I fully grasp it yet.

The writing style already promises something epic and Barker leaves it to you to figure out the world as you go along. I think this will be a fun read!
