Mike Finn is on page 100 of What Abigail Did That Summer
This was a bookful of sunshine on a rainy day. It had me smiling all the way through.

Please let there be a sequel (or several sequels).

I don't know how Julia Spencer-Fleming does it but I step back into this series after t months and I'm immediately re-invested in the lives of the Claire and Russ.

The storytelling is vivid without being lurid and very people focused.

Then there's the humour. When the fire chief, on seeing the Reverend Claire heavily pregnant, asksRuss, 'Can Protestant Ministers do that?', he replies, 'If they're women they can."

I started this today just as an alternate to another book that I'm enjoying but needed a break from, Within a few pages, I realised that the other book had just become the alternate and that 'Fair Game' now had my full attention.

I slid straight in to the story. I'm liking Anna more with each book. The hook up with the FBI is a nice touch.

I'm only two chapters in and I already want to set the day aside and spend it reading this. It's a well-written rollercoaster lubricated by dry humour, close observation and a central character who iuges everyone harshly, especially herself.

It's frightening to be taken back to the 1950s, when America was the only one with a hydrogen bomb. This is very well done. Hard-edged, restrained, immersed in historical detail but heavily focused on one man's character and conflicts.

This sounds like it's going to be very sad. I find myself sliding into the mood of the main character and I know she has a lot to be sad about but that I haven't found out what it is yet.
