"'I have no wish to perish'; but she imagines it vividly." Virginia is mentally at a loss, with the death of Thoby and the 'loss' of Vanessa to Clive Bell. Also she discovers her confusion of sexuality, being 'hot and ready for affection' yet knowing no acceptable outlet. She does not call herself a lesbian.

The chapter 'Thoby' is mainly not about Thoby, only the final pages are about Virginia Stephen's brother. Connections to Jacob's Room and Mrs Dalloway. These really are the in between years, the calm before the storm. 'I feel writing is an irreticent thing to be kept in the dark - like hysterics.'

In 'Changes' Virginia Stephen moves from Hyde Park Gate to Bloomsbury and earns her first money as a literary journalist. She starts with getting ideas for her first novel The Voyage Out. I think these years between her father's and brother's death was important for her. It gave her space to develop herself as a writer, despite the fact that she was restrained by influential people and being her father’s daughter’.
