I don’t know which of the three main characters I like best. But, if I had to choose, it’d probably be Diana because her story arc is amazing.

What’s cracking me up is that Helen is so focused on beer and beer-making from such an early age, it’s like she’s a beer savant. She literally has a moment of clarity that beer would be her calling at age fifteen after her first sip. It’s like she’s the misunderstood genius ahead of her time and her timid sister Edith can’t but help fade into the woodwork in comparison.

I’m liking it so far. It has all the telltale signs of a Western—the tough bravado, gritty dialogue, and a sense of tension with every meeting. I’m also liking the unlikely partnership between Ranger and stone cold hired killer to take down an even bigger piece of work. It’s very The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Payback is a bitch and her name is Caitlin Strong.

Tea company CEO goes to a dinner party at her sister’s place. There she gets into a row with her fiancé and they leave early. Walking home, she stops and tells her fiancé to go ahead home without her. He sees her talking to clarinet busker before he no longer sees her.

By morning she’s dead.

Nope. I haven’t the slightest inkling of how it all ties together.

I can already tell in the first 70 pages this book is going to impress me. Talking keys, a sensible system of magic, merchant-run governments—this has all the earmarks of an accessible fantasy series like Mistborn told with the panache of an old adventure movie serial.
