It is such a struggle not to ravage this book but one must take it a bit slower to enjoy every morsel!!!!

New Year’s Day, I am beginning to wonder whether I am not in a groove. It needs courage to get out of one. So far, I haven’t bought any great courage to meet life. I accept the easier, lazier and more comfortable way every time.

Life itself keeps us level if we let it. There are always blankets to bind, plants to water, rugs to hook, curtains to wash, meals to get, the weekly shopping. We are always needed in various places by friends and family. As we tuck ourselves in our restlessness aside for the day and proceed with the business of living, the things in our outer and visible world give us a boost out of any kind of inward slough.

There are a few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it, and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters and of little dependence that can be placed on their appearance of either merit or sense!

What a happy woman, I am living in a garden, with books, babies, birds and flowers, and plenty of leisure to enjoy them!

I long more and more for a kindred spirit, it seems so greedy to have so much loveliness to oneself, but kindred spirits are so very, very rare. I might also as well cry for the moon.
