"I understand, I'm beginning, I'm beginning to understand."

We can invest enormous time and energy in serious efforts to know another person, but in the end, how close we are able to come to that person's essence? We convince ourselves that we know the other person well, but do we really know anything important about anyone? Haruki Murakami poses this question in chapter two. This question, in my opinion, sets up the unfolding of the characters relationship with one another.

I am not digging this one. Not one bit. But, alas, it must be finished. Not out of interest, but simply because you have too see things through to the end.

So far, Blatty has introduced Kinderman, the detective that is investigating Dennings bizzare death. In the last chapter Lieutenant Kinderman is discussing the oddity with Father Karras and is looking for the help of the Father in hope that he might be more of an insight on witchcraft, strange cult activities (murder), and the recognizable patterns that has been documented as fact.
