I was struck by the similarities that First Blood shares with the Thompson novel The Getaway -- especially the hallucinatory final chapter. Darker and more nuanced than the Stallone film where Rambo is clearly the hero, here Rambo while not the villain per se would be described as the novel's antagonist to the relatively reasonable police chief who shares equal billing as a viewpoint character.
