"On November 2, 1956, a cablegram sent by the State Department to Tito asked him to give the Soviet government the following assurance:

The Government of the United States does not look with favor upon governments unfriendly to the Soviet Union on the borders of the Soviet Union."

This happened after Hungary drove out the communists, during the "1956 revolt of the Hungarian patriots".
