Consider the many books and TV series have been set along the coasts and inland rivers of Wales. Even a time travel story solves a murder mystery more than a thousand years old. The sheriff hangs.

St. Peter's Fair, also a thousand years ago, gives us the flavor of languages spoken, translated, carried long distances across Europe. Why life expectancy was only 40 years for women, while landowners prospered.

I appreciated the fine writing about sexual freedom as it changed from the 1950's onward. My teenage friends and I in the late 1950's were vocal about desires, but teasing. By the mid-60's we all were aware of free love, but I did not know until I read Judy Collins memoir how free love was promoted by psychologists such as the Sullivans. In brief it's better to have multiple partners without commitment or guilt.

Read this through in a short time? No! Write a cast of characters. Some will be tragic heroes, other unknown, because they were nameless young boys and girls who had no idea why they were being executed by neighbors, teenage radicals, high ranking war heroes, or simply buried in bogs. Middle-of-the night reading for me. Not healthy given 2019 slaughters in America's cities and neighborhoods all too similar.

My second time reading "Colorless" confirms my appreciation for poetic prose, and the wide range of emotions the author releases in me.
