If a consciousness of the uncertainty of life can dispose you to serious and useful thoughts, I would not deprive you of the benefit of such reflections, whether you do eventually recover or not.

"That is quite possible," remarked Heathcliff, forcing himself to seem calm, "quite possible that your master should have nothing but common humanity and a sense of duty to fall back upon. But do you imagine that I shall leave Catherine to his duty and humanity?..."

'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' is very acute and all, but one needs blood to live.

'Why did you let the dog out?' he asked. 'You knew I wanted him.' 'By what token?' I replied; 'by throwing the book at him? but perhaps it was intended for me?' Change the vernacular a tad and the locale a bit and the century a smidge and you have an A+ crash course in US masculinity. This is why time =/= progress.

C'mooon, Marías. Keep your head in the Shakespeare game and stop drifting off into Normalizing Rape Culture Land. Your rating depends on it.

There's nothing like a Marías work when it comes to firing one up for tackling 'The Complete Works of Shakespeare'.

The story of the Brontë sisters is one of many reasons why I so fervently promote books by women. I'm never going to get over it.

Tired of Soliloquies

I sing for debilitating love,
for a body of dew, wasting.

I sing to sift through what remains of silence:
slaughter, the shreds in its wake,
and the cover of green words.

I prefer to think it not only possible but necessary and salvific to bring poetry from one language to another, with Hans Magnus Enzensberger's caveat: "kann nicht Übersetzung von Poesie sein"": what is not poetry cannot be a translation of poetry.

You know how 'Middlemarch' is really great cause it gets into all these people's heads and doesn't fuck around with sentimentilization or objectification? This work has much less philosophy, but you get my drift.
