James is reading The Big Book of Ghost Stories
I'm reading these stories in roughly the order they appear in the book. They are organized by theme. I have only read the first three stories, but the literary quality is high and the tales so far are suitably eerie. I find reading one at a time, in the evening, with one lamp on, lends itself to an atmospheric experience. I'm relishing going further into this hefty volume.

I'm not sure what to make of this yet. He has some rich descriptions of otherwordly places and beings, but these are more vignettes than stories so far. Considering he saw himself as a poet first I suppose this comes as second-nature to Smith.

Howard is excellent at creating a sense of place through his vivid descriptions. He also excels at creating momentum and intrigue. His ability to convey action is first-rate. Where he falters is with dialogue and character. This is a journey not a visit with people.

What Howard is good at is creating a sense of place. He is also excellent in his descriptions of action and battle. Where he falters is with dialogue and character. All of this makes for an extremely vivid journey to another time and place. It's a ride, not a visit with people.

I am new to this authour. Having found this hardcover in the Williamsford Mill I thought I would give it a try as the description of the alternate Paris appealed to me. So far I find myself in a world of black and red. Red wine, a red ring, red hair, smashed cherries and blood of course all set against the night.
