Meh. Perfectly readable, but a formulaic spy thriller: gruff, hyper-competent protagonist, a predictably “sexy” female counterpart, and plot you can see coming. It’s quick and punchy, but utterly forgettable.

I’ve never been so frustrated by a book. How has the author made the subject so boring. So much is just stated, nothing is explained or given more colour.

Just when I think there’s a chance of some character building or narrative (particularly in the last quarter) they break into list making again!

This wasn’t the epic I was expecting after the brilliance of the last two instalments. It’s still a great, eminently readable book, with all of the Tchaikovsky trademarks. But it ultimately left me feeling a little underwhelmed.
