The men had in their seafaring lives labored under captains generous, captains cruel, captains competent, captains in all ways at sea, captains who oversaw every detail and captains who ventured only upon occasion from stateroom. And under all of these had survived. A sailor‘s work is, largely, sailor‘s work, without regard to whose hand be on the wheel.

Wenn ich unwillkürlich vor den Schaufenstern eines Sarghändlers stehen bleibe und jedem Leichenzug folge und besonders wenn ich der Versuchung kaum widerstehen kann … Dann ist es höchste Zeit für mich, wieder zur See zu gehen. Vielleicht ist jeder einmal in der Stimmung, einfach an Bord zu gehen und hinauszufahren auf den Ozean. Nur wissen die meisten nichts davon.

Vor Jahren - wer weiß, wie lange es her ist, - da war eines Tages mein Beutel leer, und da mich an Land nichts mehr hielt, beschloss ich, zur See zu gehen und mir den nassen Teil unserer Erde zu besehen. Das ist meine Art, mich wieder aufzumuntern, wenn ein feuchter, kalter November in meiner Seele Einzug hält.

„Alles“, sagte Ilya trocken. Shane verdrehte die Augen. „Nicht alles. Aber Hockey ist mir verdammt wichtig!“ „Ach, wirklich.“ „Ach, fick dich. Tut mir leid, dass ich immer noch Pokale gewinnen will, statt mit meinen Teamkollegen zwischen Niederlagen Gras zu rauchen.“ Die Worte trafen Ilya, als hätte man ihm ins Gesicht geschlagen.
- Hui. Shane ist so doof, es ist nicht zu fassen.

Als Nemo eintrat, schien er uns gar nicht zu bemerken. Auf seinem sonst so sicheren Gesicht entdeckte ich Unruhe.
„Ein Zwischenfall, Kapitän?“ fragte ich.
„Nein. Diesmal ist es ein Unfall.“
„Was Ernstes?“
„Vielleicht“

Der Südpol ist kein Spaß, nicht umsonst gibt es da die „Berge des Wahnsinns.“

Ich frage den Kapitän: „Ein Unfall?“

Oh, ich liebe es, wenn er in Menschengestalt knurrt und schnurrt und sie ihn „mein Kater“ nennt!
