I'm now on page 605 of Vol. 2 (I have read other books at the same time). Those who have seen the Ken Burns series on the Civil War will remember the urbane and deeply knowledgeable Shelby Foote and the personal details he brought to the narrative. He described the books in the titles as "a narrative," and that's what they are. Everyone likes a good story, and that's what these books are.

I'm now on page 133 of Volume Two.
