I have to keep reminding myself that the book is set in Jackson, MS and not Atlanta GA.

You know you’re reading a novel about The South when narrators are called “Skeeter” (and have an actual given name of “Eugenia,” and ‘colored’ maids have a name like “Aibileen,” and baby girls have names like “Mae Mobley” (when they’re not being called simply “Baby Girl”).

It reads okay, but I'm still not in love with it - has a very artificial feel to it.

This book comes highly recommended by various sources, but so far after four chapters I'm not particularly in love with it.

Gets off to a slow start, but like Tryon's LADY, it gradually becomes more engrossing.

Thomas Tryon was a MASTER suspense novelist!

Has a dream-like ambiance to it, which may be why it reads more slowly than I expected.

Seems to be very much a 'bildungsroman' based on Michener's early years.
