Philip is on page 329 of 496 of Ross Macdonald
Really bogs down around 2/3 of the way through - could have used some judicious editing.

Really starts to drag when we get to the late 1960s.

Philip
Philip is finished with Beast In View
A fast read, and somewhat daring in its themes for the 1950s.

I have to keep reminding myself that the book is set in Jackson, MS and not Atlanta GA.

You know you’re reading a novel about The South when narrators are called “Skeeter” (and have an actual given name of “Eugenia,” and ‘colored’ maids have a name like “Aibileen,” and baby girls have names like “Mae Mobley” (when they’re not being called simply “Baby Girl”).

Philip is on page 157 of 374 of The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1)
It reads okay, but I'm still not in love with it - has a very artificial feel to it.

This book comes highly recommended by various sources, but so far after four chapters I'm not particularly in love with it.

Philip is on page 288 of 427 of The Last Hurrah
A rather static book, very little action and lots of talk-talk-talk - these characters talk in multiple paragraphs sometimes!

Gets off to a slow start, but like Tryon's LADY, it gradually becomes more engrossing.

Has a dream-like ambiance to it, which may be why it reads more slowly than I expected.

Seems to be very much a 'bildungsroman' based on Michener's early years.

A typically Rendellian concoction of oddballs and eccentrics - irresistible, of course!
