This might be the best of the vampire hunter D books since the first. Doris and Dan were such nice characters, they're impossible to beat, but Pluto's so stupidly charismatic and interesting. It's hard to know if he's playing both sides or if he really is D's ally. D himself doesn't get much development in this one, but that's just the MO for this series: very incremental progress into understanding him as a person

Pluto VIII is the problematic body snatching homosexual biker of all time, name me one side character more aggressively fun than this I'll wait.

I have. Thoughts about all of this and how Kitt’s whole character did a 180 because of grief because honestly? Yea that happens. Grief steals rational thought from you, but this author must think the rest of us are irrational too to ever believe that civilians would just go with literally any of this. Stuff just happens because it happens in other books I’m tired I’m taking a nap I’m so. I’m so tired.

This whole book is mashed potatoes with no gravy. Kit’s chapters add a much needed break from them wandering for like literally 200 pages and bantering. Paedyn made it to the desert in about 2-4 chapters there is noooo need for why it now suddenly takes 4x as long.

This book could’ve been an email or done as a duology I think, desperately needed some trimming

I'm not sure I like this one as much because even though it has actual stakes this time, I don't understand why Paedyn doesn't just keep running when she knows she's being chased.

I know it’s a stereotype for a romantasy female lead to be stupid, but this chapter with her not being able to put two and two together about a Resistance meeting in her own house is making me wanna chew rocks. She has one brain cell and it’s currently occupied by the muscles feathering in Kai’s jaw

So in Hunger Games, children are forced to fight each other as a punishment for rebellion against the oppressive government. Here, the Purging Trials are more like a knight’s tourney to win a heck ton of money and renown if you win. What I want to know is why it’s kids fighting instead of seasoned warriors which would make for a better show? I feel like this is here just because battle royale is a trope

Idk if it’s because I’ve been reading poorly translated light novels, but this book is actually pretty good? Maybe my standards for romance are in Hades right now because Heaven Officials Blessing translation is like eating cardboard, but I enjoy Paedyn and Kai together (even if their names sound like white Midwestern gender reveal names)

I'm giving Powerless a second chance; I tried it last April when I was feeling really burnt out on fantasy and romance books, but I might have more patience for it now after reading a ton of actually terrible books. I don't know that Powerless is five star material for me, but maybe it's a three? We'll see, so far I like it better this time than I did more than a year ago.

There sure is a lot of name dropping of characters that haven't even showed up or even mattered yet that I feel like in the original fanfic she was like "yea Neville was a heart mage" or whatever she's on about here. I'm gonna give it a chance, I swear.
