The ambition here is eye-watering. Dawn of Everything levels of scope, but published before that!

This is alot more comprehensive than The Undercommons - sad to see it's been alot less widely read.

2nd read of this and this time I -get- it.

There's a passage in Marx where he muses upon what it would be like "if the commodity could speak". Well, twenty years prior, Frederick Douglass answered in advance - it would speak like *this*. This is the memoir of a commodity in circulation, passed from one master to the next, subject to whims impersonal and inhuman. Harrowing.

There isn't a sentence here that doesn't bristle with eloquence. Complete joy to read.
