Found the through-line for this whole story: "Why is it people are angry, bitter, full of hatred for one another!" (p. 123)

"A base nature subjected to tyranny will always tyrannize others as soon as it has secured its own release.". Paulo Freire was saying the same in Pedagogy of the Oppressed!

Seems odd that I have written paper and applied for jobs quoting Freire, but haven't read his most famous text. Now's my chance...
