As with all Fracassi books, he takes his time setting up the characters, their relationships, and the locations they are in so that, when the action starts, you've got everything perfectly placed in your mind. It just requires some patience on the part of the reader to get to the action and for that action to have the extra emotional and mental impact that the set up creates.
