While the pacing is pretty awful here, this is a LOT easier to stomach than the dubbed anime version I grew up with. Though for certain characters I still hear echoes of those voice-actors doing their best...and failing...

Despite the seemingly bright & cute cover, this is 100% Lasky. It isn't set in a post-human world like the Ga'hoole Owls books, but it has that same throughline of darkness and blood that makes her children's books so appealing.

Huh. This was a surprisingly dark, thoughtful, lusciously-written mystery.

That was a heck of a finale, both to the book and the initial Necroscope series... You can really feel Lumley love of weird fiction come out. And the end of the Cold War with a more sympathetic depiction of the Russians.

Two things occur to me: 1) I always forget how suddenly Lumley's work swerves into erotica and then abruptly swerves out of it again, but that was a common feature of horror in the era; 2) both plot-lines (Keogh's & that of the defeated vamphyri lords) are great, but both feel like they deserve their own full books -- as it is, I keep getting annoyed that we can't stick with one or the other.

One of the primary complaints I've heard about this series is that Harry Keogh is a fairly boring protagonist -- that the villains and side-characters are always more interesting than he is. And...I mean, the latter is certainly true, but I would strongly dispute the former. However, even if that first point were correct, this book would demolish it as we see an alien consciousness begin to rewrite Harry's self...
