Finally encountered the reason for the lengthy lecture about racism (without saying it's racism) at the start of the volume. And yes, that one panel with the circus worker DID look extremely racist -- but the problem is that later on they have a normal black guy as the leader of the circus parade. And the central antagonist(?) is a quick-change artist...and the racist-looking character has his speech pattern...
