I am currently in the first half of the novel, (Poverty) and Dickens doesn't pull many punches in his depiction of abject hopeless poverty.
So far I can say that the protagonists are sufficiently people you root for and the - seeming - antagonists are, at least at this point sufficiently the type of people you really want to get what they have coming - or at least have a change of heart in some way.

I am going to do something I rarely do and that is a story by story mini review of each story...Should be hard but fulfilling.

Yay! Starting a large paper book I have owned for years, and never read. I am stoked and after reading the first Newford Story (Uncle Dobbins Parrot Fair) I think I will be very happy.

I am onto my third Fredrik Backman book in a row, because that is how I roll.

A lot shorter than the last book I posted having read. Enjoying so far.

Just opening it. I always open "classics" with trepidation. But mostly get rewarded.

Good stuff already!

This is essentially the sequel to Queen of Angels. However , it has many many characters that do not appear in the first book. Mary Choy, dedicated female police officer (and in some ways the titular Queen of Angels) is back, and not having an easy time of it in her new post. So is Martin Burke the pioneer of the Country of the Mind. But so are a whole lot - a whole lot - of other people. At times almost too many.

This book is maybe not (so far) one of Bear's best, but it does have his trademark inventiveness. It's not all about the world building with him, it's about how people live and interact in it.

I haven't read a book by Bear in a while...this will be fun.

I am back in the 19th century!

I am moving on, to something so different from his Demon Princes series, it is like a different writer wrote this. I am gonna dive right into the gloomy elegiacishness of it all.

And now onto the final Demon Prince book, and the last of the evil quintet for Kirth Gersen to track down, Howard Alan Treesong, the most elusive of all the Demon Princes.

As reviews I read suggest, this is the most humorous of the Demon Princes novels. I am not disappointed with that or with the world building going on in this novel. These are human societies that barely resemble any we know. But that's the point here. The weirdness of it all.

This is already beginning to percolate in only a few pages.

Narvath is a fascinating character, as I have read in criticism of this book.
What could beat a Mad Poet, who also happens to be the unfortunate role model for an interstellar crime lord and sexual deviant, who is also a sensitive little monster.

I have a good feeling about the next Demon Prince, Viole Falushe.
