These books and movies are hard for me to read and watch, but they are important. We must read stories like this to realize how far we have come and how easy it is to slip back into this way of backwards thinking.

Mathabane's father reminded me so much of my father; poisoned by the systematic oppression he experienced under Jim Crow laws.

Education and books are the key. I thank authors like Mark Mathabane.

I'm reading this book in preparation for my new job as an elementary teacher. I'm finding it to be a fascinating story of triumph and perseverance. I'm reading the youth edition now. When I have more time (my summer reading list is extensive as you can imagine teaching two brand new content areas), I hope to read the full version.

Long, but worth it. So many themes you see in modern works!

Wow. What an undertaking. Considered one of thee great books. I definitely think comic book enthusiasts should read this book. Albeit he's horrible at it, Don Quixote is a model of the first comic superhero. A Deadpool of the late Renaissance. Though long for modern tastes, I am happy that I've taken this sojourn. (My last great novel as I begin lesson planning for next year.)
