This is the second presidential biography in my self-imposed torture experiment, and already I am enjoying it far, far more than the first. It may be partially that the subject and author are separated by a greater chronological distance, but the LBJ biography also lacked sparkling prose, metaphor, or the skillful entwining of quotation and evocative, descriptive context.

So far I do not care for this book. The writing style is detail heavy and narratively weak. Rather than demonstrating its points with narrative techniques, it baldly states opinions without truly supporting its claims. I am however learning a lot about this horrible man.

"You are more ignorant than a child, ser knight. There are no shadows in the dark. Shadows are the servants of light, the children of fire. The brightest flame casts the darkest shadows." Even though she is totally a piece of work, I'm really enjoying the complexity of Melisandre's morality in this book. There are parallels with Daenerys's conception of justice later on...
