Why is the book skipping such big chunks of time? 100 pages in and the protagonist is already on his fourth and final year at the magic school.

Thoughts: this book screams of The Lies of Locke Lamora so far.

Also, I can't believe miss Bardugo had to ruin Kaz by making him 17 years old and therefore unrealistic. Just make him 25, or 30, or even 40, and that would make it minimally plausible. Why are YA authors so stuck on that number? Do they realize how little it takes to make a character eye roll worthy?

Guile theme pops into my head every time something exciting happens.
