Autumn was here, and Cleveland was beautiful in the fall. God, he loved Cleveland.

 “What if they see us back here?” she said when he set her on her feet.
“Then we’ll pretend like we’re here for a tryst. I promise you, it won’t be the first time someone retired to the cloakroom at a Catholic fundraiser.” 

He kissed her with almost dreamlike ferocity, the hand in her hair keeping her face where he liked it, her chin tipped up to him. For an endless moment, he nibbled and bit and suckled like he dreamed of tropical beaches and ripe fruit dripping over his fingers.

He tossed the dime she’d given him into the air and caught it again, repeating the action as he headed back in the direction he’d come, a boy playing a big man’s game.

“He’s handsome, is he?” Zuzana huffed. “What does he look like then, Lenka. Hmm? You can’t see the buttons on your own frocks without your spectacles. He could look like the dog that hangs around the sandwich shop, and you wouldn’t know the difference.”

A euphoria hit me.

Waves of pleasure coursed through me with the same intensity as the jet shot out its water. My torso jerked and shook as I writhed against the tub.

I watched her walk away, my mind playing out many scenarios, as I often did. Especially when I was getting myself off, I played MANY scenarios with Zadie and Helios as the main characters.

Poppy was born to serve. She was as submissive as they came, and I took full advantage.

Another round at the carnaval!

Tonight, we’d find somewhere nice to sleep. We’d get a decent meal in our bellies, and we’d sleep well.

His eyes … I could see the maelstrom of madness starting to build, but this wasn’t his demons. This was something else entirely.  

“Oh fuck, Mais,” he breathed as he watched. I could see the look in his eyes, he was becoming ravenous at the exquisite agony I was feeling while forcing myself to continue.  

One thing about me that Elijah always hoped to see, he had missed out on because I hid this side of myself from him.
I never wanted him to see me like this.

 I stared at my reflection while wondering how I let things get this far. I could have recounted my steps, retraced all of the things that went wrong, and they all led back to my love for Elijah.

 Finally. Everything feels right and in place. 

Hope is lost. All that’s left is darkness and it’s quickly swallowing me up.

Unperturbed by her rude behavior, he signs something to her. She signs back.
“What’s she saying?” I ask, sitting up on my elbows.
“That you’re better looking than me but dumber.”

He stepped onto his ship, and when he turned back to look for me, I was gone.

 There was always a leader. He was not the largest, and he need not be the captain, but he was the one they looked to for instruction in their cruelty.

“She eats sailors. Six at a time, one for each mouth, and if the oars are too slow, she takes twelve. A few of them try to fight her, but you can imagine how that works out. You can hear them screaming for quite a ways.”

   I lay on the dirt, weeping. Those flowers had made him his true being, which was blue, and finned, and not mine.
