Fascinating book. Reads like a novel. If you want to make history interesting to students, teach about the Medicis.

This is the dumbest woman alive. Complete dingbat. Interesting story but the main character is annoying.

Any hormonal teenager could have written this. If this is a good example of Young Adult fiction, then the reading public, especially parents and teachers, should strongly reconsider whether or not to endorse this genre. I’ll cast the first vote and say no. The only reason I’m reading it is because it was highly recommended to my child.

Who would have guessed that a story about a toy could be interesting? I guess this was the early version of Toy Story, and so far it is holding my attention. Well written. Sadly, you can see the deterioration of our use of the English language when you compare the vocabulary in this 1929 Newbery Award winning children’s book to the vocabulary used in today’s comparable books.

This is a slow book. Most of the writing deals with her normal teenage emotions and issues. That gets boring in a hurry. Thankfully the editors highlighted the parts that have to deal with Stalin, the police, etc so you can skip to those sections. It's a diary but not quite the same as Anne Frank because it doesn't really tell a story about people the way Frank's diary does.
