anyone else found the first 100 pages the epitome of brutality? i think it beats Blood Meridian. i love it thought. this woman should be mandatory reading.

how abominable is it to "read" a jacqueline woodson's book as an audiobook? how many rules of What Is Right am i violating? i feel awful. please absolve me.

this is brutal but damn it's a good read. can't think of a recent slavery story that is so compelling. head and shoulders about Underground Railway, IMO.

this is about race, yes, but i was wrong: it's not about whiteness, it's about blackness. americans haven't learned yet to write about whiteness.

it's that i don't *like* this, but i wish i weren't in for another 4 months of reading it. maybe someone will teach this talented writer compression, and then his books won't be such a wordavalanche.

this writer talks so fucking much. it's a good book, but the number of words it takes to cover a scene is absolutely staggering.

i am really fascinated by how much i like this book while i feel i should not. i guess there's a ton of expectations that come with a label, and it's hard to shake the idea that women's fiction is formulaic. this is so well written and so interesting. wow.
