The first chapter is already filled with sorrow and atmospheric tension. I really like du Maurier’s description of the bleakness of the coach ride and the introduction of Mary Yellan and her quick backstory. The hints at Jamaica Inn also make this chapter an intriguing start.

A great introductory preface by Sarah Dunant in 2003. Hearing a little about the story and characters in relation to Daphne du Maurier’s past life up until Jamaica Inn are very interesting before reading the novel.
