Mona's moodiness is temporarily cured by inviting Quiggin to lunch, but she ignores him when the psychic arrives. A game of planchette seems to refer to him personally, and puts all on edge.

Everyone is deep in politics, Members gets the boot, Mona runs off with Quiggin, Stringham has disappeared into the bottle. Umfraville makes his debut, charming everyone. Nick's only real interest is Jean.

Members stands Nick up, bringing Templer, wife Mona, & now separated Jean back into orbit. Quiggin turns up to replace him, but can't compete with Templers. Nick & Jean's affair begins.

B02 - CH03
Nick meets Barnby, whose gossip clarifies things. Nick accepts an invitation to the country with low expectations, introducing him to the partygoing set. Jean & Widmerpool crop up unexpectedly.

B02 - CH04
Stringham marries, Jean procreates, Deacon dies on his birthday, Quiggin & Members wisely bury the hatchet, Barnby's love affair succeeds, Widmerpool's star rises. Nick continues to stagnate passively.

Nick is surprised to meet Widmerpool in France, staying in the same house during his pre-college vacation. Not registering Widmerpool's growing power over people, Nick comes to understand (but not admire) him a little more.

Stringham eventually joins Nick's new college social circle. A car accident with Templer's new friends (& easy girls) sours Stringham on their company, seemingly for good.

Nick makes friends with two dissimilar older boys. Stringham: moody, bit of a dreamer, eager to move on to the next thing. Templer: semi-serious, lazy student, interested in the pleasures of life. Nick's fascination with the odd and rather relentless Widmerpool begins.

The boys grow closer, Nick spends time with both families. Templar's sister Jean is an intriguing but disinterested presence.
