I’ve been convinced that the majority of Nietzsche scholarship is suspect or just delusional.

I thought I new Nietzsche and read him carefully…turns out, not so much.

I've been convinced about the hermeneutics of innocence; I've read Nietzsche before but not with as much context as Losurdo provides. I'm finding this approach to a historical materialist interpretation helpful. Losurdo contextualizes Nietzsche's interventions with what his contemporaries were saying…

I found his description of the state management of rivers in China interesting and very relevant. Among the reasons there needs to be a state: the management of the regular maintenance of the dykes which hold their annually overflowing rivers in check. Otherwise, millions will die and starve. Already in the early nineteenth century Europeans were aware of death on that scale.

The footnotes are very helpful.

Now (at this point in Losurdo’s argument) where Nietzsche “Judeophobia” has been firmly established, even his association of Judaism with socialism and the French Revolution, Nietzsche’s later comments about women are not so out of place.

Interesting that world historical individuals are more Spirit than they are their own person…this reminds me of his description of the constitutional monarch in Philosophy of Right, who isn’t really an individual, but a vehicle for the state to express its will.

Terribly fascinating.

This book addresses all of Nietzsche’s writings, published and unpublished, letters and fragments.

I haven’t read Nietzsche’s early work in a while; it was completely lost on me that his first book was a polemic against socialism.

I don’t remember Hegel being as explicit about the Fight to the Death happening only in the state of nature. Isn’t civil war nearly the state of nature?

I’m at the shining part again. Shining of what? The concept? I don’t remember. It’s strange to be back here again.
