Reading this book of poems in order, cover to cover, empathy sprouts new buds. Recommended. Quiet and focus required.

I’m reading Samuel Johnson is Indignant by Lydia Davis right now as well. I believe this book (her stories in general, perhaps) owes a debt to Baudelaire’s Paris Spleen. Maybe that’s obvious. Baudelaire was one of the first prose poem writers and Davis’s stories are as much prose poems as they are very short stories. Anyway, both books are fantastic! Both recommended.

Excellent! I’m very engaged in this story. The writing is beautiful and the story is vivid.

This book articulates so well things I didn’t realize I so needed to be articulated. Zapruder writes in chapter 6 that Stevens proposed poetry as “a kind of environmentalism of the imagination, a call for us to actively carve out in our own minds and daily lives a space for imagination that is like a nature preserve or ecologically protected area.” Well said!
