Ungraceful prose. I read for storytelling and themes but the way in which Stoner is written is just so intentionally unpalatable and amateurish that it ruins the aesthetic value that we are intrinsically drawn to and are captivated by. Perhaps I am just a pretentious idealist. I fail to see how this novel has risen to the ranks of 20th century modern classic.
