There God challenges those who scoff at his word and who are hardened in their rebellion and their wickedness. 'Well,'he says,' they think they are waging war on those who preach my word and they think they can frustrate them by this means. But I am the one they are fighting against. So they will see the one whom they pierced.' Pg 134

Thus, although while he hung on the cross he was an object of shame to men, God willed that by the lips of Pilate he should be proclaimed king. Clement notes that Peter so repented, that all his life after, every night when he heard the cock crow, he would fall upon his knees, and, weeping bitterly, would beg pardon of his sin. Ah, souls, you can easily sin as the saints, but can you repent with the saints? Many can sin with David and Peter, that cannot repent with David and Peter, and so must perish for ever.
