Olenin felt keenly, that night especially, that here in this village was his home, his family, all his happiness, and that he never had and never would live so happily anywhere as he did in this Cossack village.

A tiger's function in the scheme of things is to help maintain the balance of nature and if, on rare occasions, when driven by dire necessity, he kills a human being or when his natural food has been ruthlessly exterminated by man he kills two percent of the cattle he is alleged to have killed, it is not fair that for these acts a whole species should be branded as cruel and bloodthirsty.

We've got everything here that there is in reality. Spaces within spaces, a blending of times and races, virtues and vices. Everything and nothing. All we need is what we hate in real life. Death, blood, false beauty, and borrowed wisdom.

Alexandrians are followers of a certain science fiction writer from St Petersburg. They're all for the merging of man and computer, or they expect virtuality to bestow unimagined blessings.

Growing up the way I did, I learned how easy it is for white people to get comfortable with a system that awards them all the perks.

New York is where it is going to begin, I think. You can see it coming. The insect experts have larned how it works with locusts. When the critical point is reached, they turn savage and swarm, and try to eat the world.

St Jerome: It is generally admitted that only a doctor should practice medicine and only a carpenter build a house. The art of searching the scriptures is the only one that everybody is sure that he possesses.

As we glance over the early Christian centuries, then,
we may well ask in the name of progress and modernity,
what had the Church to do with an outworn culture?
Conscious of a new revelation and of modem needs,
what should it do but leave the dead past to its dead
and press on?

They come into white people's lives like that in sudden sharp black trickles that isolate white facts for an instant in unarguable truth like under a microscope; the rest of the time just voices that laugh when you see nothing to laugh at, tears when no reason for tears. They will bet on the odd or even number of mourners at a funeral.

I give [this watch] to you not that you may remember time, but that you might forget it now and then for a moment and not spend all your breath trying to conquer it. Because no battle is ever won he said. They are not even fought. The field only reveals to man his own folly and despair, and victory is an illusion of philosophers and fools.

Father went to the door and looked at us again. Then the dark came back, and he stood black in the door, and then the door turned black again. Caddy held me and I could hear us all, and the darkness, and something I could smell.

The bottle was still half full. I shook it gently, stuffed it in my overcoat pocket, put my hat somewhere on my head and left. I made the elevator without hitting the walls on either side of the corridor, floated downstairs, strolled out into the lobby.

But God shapes all our fitness, and gives each man his meaning, even as he guides the wavering lines of snow descending. Our Eliza was meant for books; our dear Annie for loving and cooking; I, John Ridd, for sheep, and wrestling, and the thought of Lorna; and mother to love all three of us, and to make the best of her children.

I could not but be gladdened by the softness of the weather, and the welcome way of everything. There was that power all round, that power and that goodness, which make us come, as it were, outside our bodily selves, to share them. Over and beside us breathes the joy of hope and promise; under foot are troubles past; in the distance bowering newness tempts us ever forward.

To forget one's luck of life, to forget the cark of care and withering of young fingers; not to feel, or not be moved by, all the change of thought and heart, from large young heat to the sinewy lines and dry bones of old age—this is what I have to do ere ever I can make you know (even as a dream is known) how I loved my Lorna.

The fog came down upon the moors as thick as ever I saw it; and there was no sound of any sort, nor a breath of wind to guide us. The little stubby trees that stand here and there, like bushes with a wooden leg to them, were drizzled with a mess of wet, and hung their points with dropping. Wherever the butt-end of a hedgerow came up from the hollow ground, like the withers of a horse, holes of splash were pocked and

Everyone makes this world out to be so much better than it actually is. They just see it the way they want it to be. That's why they blame people for their misfortunes. Meanwhile, they're not even satisfied with their own lives.

It was old President [Porfirio] Diaz who said nothing ever happens in Mexico until it happens. Things rock along from day to day, and then all at once you are caught up in a rush of unforeseen events.
