When Mr. Scott came to our classroom he talked about his childhood and he read us a chapter, “Girls Rule” from his book “It Took A Village”. I had a connection with Mr. Scott because at my old school, the girls took over all the games and were acting like they were the bosses of the school. ~ J.W.

When Mr. Scott came to my classroom, i felt really glad because I finally could ask a real writer some questions. I asked him about his life and how did it feel to write the book; the answers had made me really surprised. For example, he helped me understand a lot. W.G.

When Mr. Scott came to our classroom, I felt really good because I had finally met a writer and I got to ask him questions about his book! I asked him if it was difficult to write a book and he answered that it can be difficult and you must pay attention to mistakes in grammar. When I read what he wrote about him being in school I wanted to ask him questions more questions. ~ E.C.

I had a connection with this author because I feel like we are similar in a way. I feel like what he went through I am going through. ~ J.E.

Mr.Rubin inspired me. He inspired me because his childhood was not easy, nobody’s is. Mr.Rubin talked about how people have it harder than you. I was really connected to his story and conversation. He also made me want to write an autobiography like he did. When I write my autobiography I will share it like Mr.Rubin did. I hope when I share my autobiography people will understand why I wrote it and what it meant.

With so much to say about Rubin Scott’s book, It Takes a Village, if I had to choose one word to encapsulate the essence I would say: inspiring. Rubin Scott unpacks the harsh realities of growing up in an impoverished community and presents it to the reader in all its entirety of beauty and strife. He takes the reader on an emotional and visceral journey with his autobiography
